My personal thoughts and reflections:

After watching the NatureTech videos, I feel that as teachers and students who are in the field

of Design and Technology, we need to be more observant on nature and really appreciate the beauty of how different animals, plants, humans and other organisms move, eat, live, reproduce, survive, interact with one another in this big ecosystem we call Earth. Nature has been around way before mankind and I believe that every organism has its benefits for mankind to ponder and researched upon to continuously unravel the mysteries of life and improve the way of life for humans, be it in the field of medicine, architecture, transport, physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, product design, industrial design, materials engineering, fashion, the list is endless. I believe this is the future of design and technology, as our planet Earth is dying, due to Global warming and pollution, it is time for mankind to relook, learn, unlearn and relearn about nature and work together to produce sustainable designs that will slow down our ageing home called Earth.

HortPark is a one-stop gardening hub that brings together gardening-related, recreational, educational, research and retail activities under one big canopy in a park setting. It is a knowledge hub for plants and gardening and provides the platform for the industry to share best practices and showcase garden designs, products and services. This 23-hectare regional park in South-Western Singapore is also a park connector, connecting Telok Blangah Hill Park to Kent Ridge Park.

SINGAPORE: Singapore's design industry has received S$55 million in funding to help turn Singapore into a global design city.

DesignSingapore Council on Tuesday announced the new DesignSingapore Initiative Phase 2, dubbed Dsg-II.

The framework will guide national policy towards developing design capability. It also aims to use design across industry clusters for economic growth, quality of life and the environment.

The Council said Dsg-II seeks to distinguish Singapore as a key innovative nation through a three-pronged approach.

The first strategy is in developing capability – through Professional Development, Design Learning and International Market Development

The second strategy is in enabling enterprises to leverage good design for economic growth, quality of life and the environment.

Strategy three is to drive innovation and design intellectual property creation.

The National Design Centre will serve as the one-stop centre for all DesignSingapore programmes and help foster the spirit of innovation.

It will also include an integrated design hub to match-make designers and businesses and promote new possibilities for products.

SINGAPORE : The Singapore Flyer observation wheel will not resume commercial operations for at least another week. Its management is currently investigating the exact cause of the wheel's failure, which trapped 173 people for nearly seven hours on Tuesday night. The company said it could take some time to fix the problem. But it would also take time for a round of safety checks and getting the green light to re-start operations. A day after the harrowing experience of visitors being winched down from the Singapore Flyer, the tourists still came by the bus loads to catch a ride on the wheel, unaware of the closure. One tourist said: "I have been searching on the internet, and it said the first thing I would like to do when I come to Singapore (is to go on the Singapore Flyer). When I came here, I was so frustrated. (I have come) all the way from United States." Another tourist commented: "I already applied for leave and I decided to come over today... I wasted my time rushing over here." Even as repairs are being carried out, the Singapore Flyer's operator has assured the public that the wheel is safe. But for those thinking of going up on it, do not expect it to happen anytime soon, at least not until after the new year. That means the closure will have an impact on the tenants here. The management said it will be meeting the tenants to discuss the current situation. The operator also declined to reveal how much it will lose because of this closure. But losses are estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Steven Yeo, general manager, Singapore Flyer, said: "We have spoken to our corporate clients, they have confirmed their support for us. They have requested to reschedule their bookings to a later date." But while most tenants are seeing empty stores for now, one restaurant seems to be bucking the trend. Vinod Jakhmola, senior unit manager, SSP Singapore, said: "Whatever situation it is, it is for a short while. It will move on and we have to move further than that. In case of business, this is a lovely destination. People will still come back for the food outlets and definitely for the rides also." The Flyer's operator also revealed that its recent decision to reverse the rotation of the wheel was not a factor in the latest breakdown. In fact, it was a component failure which resulted in a small fire, and that caused a power outage, shutting down the entire system. Mr Yeo said even though the small fire was put out in minutes, it had caused certain problems in the circuitry board, which as a result, had to be taken out for repairs. However, even when the repairs are completed and safety checks done, the operator will still have to get the go-ahead from the police for the all-clear. - CNA/ms

Singapore Structures: Marina Barrage

Singapore's latest downtown icon

Built across the mouth of the Marina Channel, the Marina Barrage creates Singapore’s 15th reservoir, and the first in the heart of the city. With a catchment area of 10,000 hectares, or one-sixth the size of Singapore, the Marina catchment is the island’s largest and most urbanised catchment. Together with two other new reservoirs, the Marina Reservoir will boost Singapore’s water catchment from half to two-third’s of the country’s land area.

The Marina Barrage is the result of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew’s vision nearly two decades ago when he envisaged damming the mouth of the Marina Channel to create a freshwater reservoir.

Singapore Structures: Henderson Waves

At 36 metres above Henderson Road, Henderson Waves is the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore. It was built to connect the two hills of Mount Faber and Telok Blangah Hill.The bridge has a unique wave-form made up of seven undulating curved steel “ribs” that alternately rise over and under its deck. The curved “ribs” form alcoves that function as shelters with seats within.Slats of yellow balau wood, an all-weather timber found in South-East Asia, are used in the decking. Look out for carvings on the slats marking the height you are at on various points along the bridge.The wave-forms will be lit with attractive LED light from 7pm to 2am daily, giving the bridge an illuminative glow.

Practice noticing stuff and telling stories by Steve Portigal

To be a better design researcher, hone your ability to observe the world around you. Keep a regular log that you add to at least weekly (daily would be ideal). Document the strange, the curious, the weird, the awesome and the funny. Learn to keep a close eye on the artifacts, signs, designs, behaviors, products and experiences that you encounter in your everyday life.

Put your observations on the Internet. Maybe no one will see them, but the discipline of taking your observations out of your own head and publishing them in a sharable form will force you into telling a story.

As much as design research is about observing others, there's something very personal about how and what we see, and developing that voice will serve you well. Collect stories and retell them in your own way, emphasizing the perspective you want others to take away.

Your log doesn't need to be conclusive, you just need to be observant and tell people what you think, wonder, or imagine. Learn to hear yourself feeling "Hmm—that's interesting!" and then share the interesting thing, being sure to articulate what it is about it that's interesting. Don't worry about fixing it (if it needs fixing), just notice and tell a quick story in your own voice. Be funny, sarcastic, critical, or outraged as appropriate.

Set up a free account with a photo sharing site like flickr.com, or a blogging site like blogger.com (this stuff probably doesn't go into your MySpace or Facebook account). If you're visual and like to take pictures, then start with flickr for sure. Be sure to include a description of what you've taken a picture of and why you think it's interesting. If you like to write, start with blogger, telling your stories in prose (but throw in a picture once in a while). Aim for 200 words in each post.

Remember that these are sketches. To get better at this, see them as disposable rather than precious, and commit to posting something regularly. Ultimately, this should be fun, not a chore, and just think of the material you'll be able to mine when the need arises.
